  • Theme:

    Specialization as stagnation

    1–2 minutes

To specialize is to dig a deep well, which can become a stagnant pond.
The deeper you go, when you look back up you can still see the stars, but the more narrow your field of view becomes.

    Labor + Friends

    1–2 minutes

You can work twice as long if you have a friend with you.

    Workplace tactic

    1–2 minutes

No problem gets solved until the last minute. Up to the deadline people freely offer feedback and concerns, criticisms. But in the last hour they abdicate responsibility and criticality, tending to become suddenly otherwise occupied, especially if pushed to expound or do actual work.
Knowing this, you can use it to your advantage to strengthen social alliances and become the hero rather than being repeatedly upset at the folly of it all.

    Skills over Debate

    1–2 minutes

While others engage with criticism and gossip, spend your time learning skills.
Take feedback, but don’t argue, don’t ruminate: just work on yourself.

  • Theme:

    Be complex, not complicated

    1–2 minutes

An old watch is complicated, but open it up and you can see the gears and (maybe) figure out how it works. Remove a gear and it no longer functions.

A complex system has many interlocking variables, take one out and something else will replace it, making it a robust, dynamic system. Cascades of unforeseen consequences create change.

  • Theme:

    Protect yourself from yourself

    1–2 minutes

    Don’t wear yourself out.

Seriously. It just isn’t worth it to gain praise or even self-affirmation. Work hard, but know your limits.

(This comes from a continual battle with migraines.)
