The Deficit of Devotion

Passion is a poor investment if measured by the ledger.

To apply an economic lens to our deepest compulsions is to guarantee a perceived loss; the energy we sink into our obsessions rarely offers an equal return. (labor hours > concrete benefit)

Yet, the “profit” of a pursuit is often a mere byproduct. Money and kudos are fragmentary rewards for labor that is primarily self-fulfilling. (labor hours + profit = unimportant)

We do not create to be repaid; we create to satisfy a drive that finds its own human benefit in the doing, yet is a ‘measurable loss’.

The heart, unlike the market, thrives on its own depletion.
