We crave being liked for security and survival, yet roles often demand sacrificing likability.
In hierarchies, superiors prioritize duty and institutional aims over kindness, empathy, or affection. A strong leader must support people without wasting them, which earns respect—even if fondness fades when tough calls arise.
Knowing this, and as schizophrenically distasteful as it may be, earn respect for survival (not likability) and save friendship for outside the role.
