Though humans are wired for negativity, we cloak it in nostalgia.
As change accelerates, we misattribute personal discomfort to societal decline rather than our own waning/declining adaptability. Doubling down on our comfortable specialization narrows our scope, making the past (when we felt competent) seem rosier than the present, where relevance feels eroded.
As Steven Pinker noted, this cognitive bias fuels the illusion of cultural decay. Yet, the world may not be worsening—we may simply be resisting its new rhythms, confusing personal obsolescence with universal collapse.
